Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences
Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences
Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences By Jon Elster
Publisher: C U P 1999 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0521374553 , 0521376068 | PDF | 7 MB

This book is intended as an introductory survey of the philosophy of the social sciences. It is essentially a work of exposition that offers a tool box of mechanisms--nuts and bolts, cogs and wheels--that can be used to explain complex social phenomena. Within a brief compass, Jon Elster covers a vast range of topics. His point of departure is the conflict we all face between our desires and our opportunities. How can rational choice theory help us understand our motivation and behavior? More significantly, what happens when the theory breaks down but we still cleave to a belief in the power of the rational? Elster describes the fascinating range of forms of irrationality--wishful thinking, the phenomenon of sour grapes, discounting the future in non-cooperative behavior. He shows how these issues bear directly on our lives in such concrete situations as wage bargaining, economic cartels, political strikes, voting in elections, and court decisions involving child custody.

Shower of Stones: A Novel of Jeroun by Zachary Jernigan
Shower of Stones: A Novel of Jeroun by Zachary Jernigan
Shower of Stones: A Novel of Jeroun by Zachary Jernigan
Audiobook Unabridged | English | August 13, 2015 | ISBN: 1597808628 | mp3 | 1 ch 64 Kbps | 9 hrs 26 min | 259 MB

At the moment of his greatest victory, before a crowd of thousands, the warrior Vedas Tezul renounced his faith, calling for revolt against the god Adrash, imploring mankind to unite in this struggle.
Good intentions count for nothing. In the three months since his sacrilegious pronouncement, the world has not changed for the better. In fact, it is now on the verge of dying. The Needle hangs broken in orbit above Jeroun, each of its massive iron spheres poised to fall and blanket the planet's surface in dust. Long-held truces between Adrashi and Anadrashi break apart as panic spreads.
With no allegiance to either side, the disgraced soldier Churls walks into the divided city of Danoor with a simple plan: murder the monster named Fesuy Amendja, and retrieve from captivity the only two individuals that still matter to her-Vedas Tezul, and the constructed man Berun. The simple plan goes awry, as simple plans do, and in the process Churls and her companions are introduced to one of the world's deepest secrets: a madman, insisting he is the link to an ancient world, offering the most tempting lie of all . . . hope.
Concluding the visceral, inventive narrative begun in No Return, Shower of Stones pits men against gods and swords against civilization-destroying magic in the fascinatingly harsh world of Jeroun.

The Japanese Print: A Historical Guide

The Japanese Print: A Historical Guide
The Japanese Print: A Historical Guide
Weatherhill | 1982 | ISBN: 0834801671 | English | 238 pages | PDF | 29.2 MB

Of all the aspects of Japanese art, woodblock prints have had the greatest appeal for the Western world. In fact, this art form has enjoyed greater popularity in Europe and America than it ever has in Japan itself, and it is fair to say that only after Western artists, collectors, and scholars gave high praise to Japanese prints did the Japanese themselves begin to appreciate the unique artistic heritage that was theirs. The vogue for these prints that began in the West in the late nineteenth century was induced largely by the astonishing originality of their designs and the brilliance of their colors-factors that influenced such artists as Whistler, van Gogh, and Cassatt.

Living Color: The Biological and Social Meaning of Skin Color

Living Color: The Biological and Social Meaning of Skin Color
Nina G. Jablonski, "Living Color: The Biological and Social Meaning of Skin Color"
ISBN: 0520251539, 0520283864 | 2012 | PDF | 288 pages | 6 MB

Living Color is the first book to investigate the social history of skin color from prehistory to the present, showing how our body's most visible trait influences our social interactions in profound and complex ways. In a fascinating and wide-ranging discussion, Nina G. Jablonski begins with the biology and evolution of skin pigmentation, explaining how skin color changed as humans moved around the globe. She explores the relationship between melanin pigment and sunlight, and examines the consequences of rapid migrations, vacations, and other lifestyle choices that can create mismatches between our skin color and our environment.
Richly illustrated, this book explains why skin color has come to be a biological trait with great social meaning- a product of evolution perceived by culture. It considers how we form impressions of others, how we create and use stereotypes, how negative stereotypes about dark skin developed and have played out through history-including being a basis for the transatlantic slave trade. Offering examples of how attitudes about skin color differ in the U.S., Brazil, India, and South Africa, Jablonski suggests that a knowledge of the evolution and social importance of skin color can help eliminate color-based discrimination and racism.

Enzymatic Polymerisation (Advances in Polymer Science)
Enzymatic Polymerisation (Advances in Polymer Science)
Enzymatic Polymerisation (Advances in Polymer Science) By G. M. Guebitz, Anja R. A. Palmans, Andreas Heise
2011 | 157 Pages | ISBN: 3642163750 | PDF | 4 MB

The application of nature's toolset is a fast-growing area in several industries, such as food, ?ne chemicals and polymers. Speciacally in vitro enzymatic catalysis has seen a steady increase in (industrial) applications where enzyme catalysis has established itself as an indispensable tool in the synthesis of small molecules. Examples can be found in the production of pharmaceutical intermediates, where biotechnology generates signi?cant turnover and reduces the environmental impact. In recent years, enzyme catalysis was also successfully applied in polymer synthesis. The motivation for using enzymes in polymer synthesis was initially mainly scientic curiosity, but as this technology started to produce results comparable to conventional polymerizations, the potential was recognized. The possibility of making polymers that are not available from conventionalmethods and their natural character make enzymes a particularly promising catalytic system. The goal of this book is to provide an overview of enzyme catalysis in polymer synthesis structured according to the different enzyme classes used in these reactions. Notably, three of
the six enzyme groups have been reported in enzymatic polymerization in vitro, i.e. oxidoreductases, transferases and hydrolases.

Neanderthals and Modern Humans: An Ecological and Evolutionary Perspective By Clive Finlayson
Publisher: C U P 2004 | 266 Pages | ISBN: 0521820871 | PDF | 2 MB

The Neanderthals were a people native to Europe during the Pleistocene period, who became extinct between forty and thirty thousand years ago. Challenging the commonly held view that extinction was caused by the arrival of our ancestors, Clive Finlayson provides evidence that their extinction actually occurred because the Neanderthals could not adapt fast enough to changing ecological and environmental conditions, not their relationship with modern humans.

Elementary Aspects of Peasant Insurgency in Colonial India
Elementary Aspects of Peasant Insurgency in Colonial India
Elementary Aspects of Peasant Insurgency in Colonial India By Ranajit Guha
Publisher: Du..ke Unive..rsity Pre.ss 1999 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 0822323486 | PDF | 47 MB

This classic work in subaltern studies explores the common elements present in rebel consciousness during the Indian colonial period. Ranajit Guha-intellectual founder of the groundbreaking and influential Subaltern Studies Group-describes from the peasants' viewpoint the relations of dominance and subordination in rural India from 1783 to 1900.
Challenging the idea that peasants were powerless agents who rebelled blindly against British imperialist oppression and local landlord exploitation, Guha emphasizes their awareness and will to effect political change. He suggests that the rebellions represented the birth of a theoretical consciousness and asserts that India's long subaltern tradition lent power to the landmark insurgence led by Mahatma Gandhi. Yet as long as landlord authority remains dominant in a ruling culture, Guha claims, all mass struggles will tend to model themselves after the unfinished projects documented in this book.
